Hot Seat
ETNT Hot Seat with Sherwin Gardner
Gospel music, as compared to other musical genres, doesn’t dominate the local market’s listenership. This can be attributed to factors such as fewer gospel stations or local gospel songs not being played on all radio stations. Whatever it is, Sherwin Gardner has been one of the few artistes that is able to have his song played on the majority of all the popular stations. His new hit single ‘Move Up’ released from the album ‘Relentless’ has been getting heavy rotation on some of the secular radio stations including Boom Champions 94.1 and Next 99.1FM, even being played in the Bahamas.. He is currently preparing for a European tour, where he will be visiting countries such as Poland, France, Germany and Ireland, but not before he visits Guadeloupe on Easter Saturday and Trinidad on Easter Sunday. Sherwin was able to chat with us at ET&T where he talked about his son, his humility and his love for Christ Jesus.
ET&T: Who is Sherwin Gardner really?
S.G: Basically a musician. I’m dedicated to doing music; my whole life is music. I’m into music and video production as well and everything is done for the Kingdom of God. My music is just to bring positive messages to people’s lives.
ET&T: What’s new with Sherwin Gardner?
S.G: Well I just finished working on a new Album it was released two weeks ago it’s called ‘Relentless’ and this album is the number one Gospel/Reggae Album in the world.
ET&T: Is it easy to stay faithful to God?
S.G: It’s never easy because we were born in sin. The nature of man is to choose evil before choosing good but as a Christian we should always follow the word of God and fight off temptation. We should always keep focused and pressing forward in the midst of it all.
ET&T: So, how do you deal with temptation?
S.G: Well for me, I try my best to keep busy. My schedule is not a regular one I’m always doing stuff, like songwriting. The majority of my time is spent creating; I’m always involved in writing as I write for other people, mostly doing international work so I am what we would call, more of a ‘busy-body’. If not, I’m either in church or maybe going to the movies but mainly stuff that involves writing and creating.
ET&T: Do you have any children?
S.G: Yes, one son. He is six. He is very much involved in what I do, he loves music and he loves the Lord. He is very intelligent he came first in test. He is doing well and progressing as a young man.
ET&T: What is the one lesson that you would teach your son?
S.G: To be humble in everything that you do. My mother taught that to me and that’s what I am going to pass onto him. No matter how successful I am I always remember that. The Bible tells us that when you humble God will exalt you. I’ve never been a ‘swell-headed’ person and I always remember that my gift was given to me by God.
ET&T: At what age did you give your life to Christ?
S.G- I could say……I’ve been singing since I was five but I truly understood being sold out for Christ at the age of seven.
ET&T: If there was one thing in your past that you could erase, what will it be?
S.G: I don’t think that I will want to change anything. I don’t know if I can answer……some choices I would not have made but I can live progressively and try to live better every day.
ET&T: Do you have any regrets in life?
S.G: I guess there are certain things I wouldn’t do, some choices I would not have made but I am living and breathing so I have a choice to fix whatever I did. Once you have breath you have a chance to fix it, doesn’t matter what you did wrong.
ET&T: What would you tell a non-believer to encourage him to give his life to Christ?
S.G: Well I think it’s obvious to all that what God predicted will happen is happening. We live in perilous times and what he said will happen is actually coming to pass. God spoke about famines and wars and rumours of wars you know? The Bible says that he’s going come like a thief in the night; no one knows when he will come so we should live a positive life. You never know what can happen. You tried everything before and all else failed, why not try Jesus? Give him a chance.
