The New York vs. London Look

Here are two looks that never gets old. They can be worn at anytime, no matter the season (though we’ve only got dry and rainy here – thank goodness.) Fads, trends in fashion come and go quicker than you can say ‘haute couture is a French phrase for custom made high fashionable quality dressmaking.” Style, your signature look is yours to keep; all the while people are wearing tie dyes and gazette print saying its fashion, yuck.

The New York City Look

A fun chic city girl look, even if you live south, this works on almost everyone.  Ideal for day wear, still good for evening wear. Giving it to you with a 2010 spin: merge a loose fitting racerback (what we call ‘tee-back’) tank - consider one with a funky print - with black straight skinny jeans, closed toe pumps, sizeable shoulder bag, oversized sunglasses and red lipstick, viola! You’re good to go from sun up to drinks at sun down in any variant of this get up. Toss in a head band if you’re got enough bushy hair, though it looks just as fab with close crops. 9 months ago you could’ve added a beanie cap and that would be cool, for now, just throw on a waistcoat/vest if you want even more funk.

The London Street Girl

This is preppy but with a modern edge. It may not be you but mixing it up always works. For this consider a loose beaded vest, or any vest with some additions on front (feathers, collage, or add something yourself.) Wear tucked into a waist fitting (as opposed to low riding) mid thigh to knee length ruffle skirt (as opposed to mini) pull out and don some extra beady chains, flat ballerina shoes and a hand held purse. Finish up with a long sleeved fitted blazer. Seeing it? Looks good right? You can play colors and textures with this, but the signature is fashionable, playful girly with a bit of swag and the more ruffles the more spunk, roll those sleeves up!

The New York look, almost every girl into fashion will pull off at some time, some more smoothly than others. You can edge it up with colorful heels, bags, beads and the shades which seal the look. Some vests work perfectly with this, try those that have the stylish-cartoon-girl on it or ones with big bold prints like ‘PARIS’ or ‘FASHION’. The London look comes and goes – Meiling’s 2009 line flirted delightfully with it. There are always hints of it in international fashion, knee length trench coats, checkered with flats. Fans of this also favor the layered look, three and four piece mergers.

Essentially, as trends come and go once you’ve soundly found your style you are able to merge the latest fashion fads with your style secure in the knowledge that in three weeks time you’ll still be rocking you. So say, for the gazette print, you can use the vest in your New York look but it’s not very ‘London’ now is it?
